Frankfurt-based game developer Keen Games has done it again. Their survival action title Enshrouded has been named the Best German Video Game at the German Computer Game Awards, earning widespread recognition and a prize of €100,000.
This latest honor adds to the studio’s growing list of accolades. Enshrouded not only secured the top spot as the best German game, but also took home the award for “Best Innovation and Technology,” bringing an additional €40,000 in prize money to the team. With both wins, the spotlight is once again on Frankfurt as a hub of creative game development.
In Enshrouded, players take on the undead “Legions of the Mist” using swords, bows, and arrows. But it’s more than just combat – players also construct buildings and tackle a range of side challenges. The game, whose name means “enveloped” or “shrouded” in English, was released in early 2024 and quickly became a fan favorite among the gaming community.
This isn’t Keen Games’ first brush with success. Back in December, Enshrouded swept four categories at the German Developer Award. And even before that, the studio was no stranger to the spotlight – in 2017, it won the German Computer Game Award for its role-playing title Portal Knights, which received federal funding of €110,000.
Creative Director Antony Christoulakis reflected on the achievement, stating, “We invested many years into this project. It was a difficult path at times, but it feels amazing to receive so much recognition for our work.”
And the success goes far beyond awards. On the global gaming platform Steam, Enshrouded has already attracted more than four million players – a testament to its broad appeal and the growing reputation of Frankfurt’s gaming industry.
